Managers voted for up to 5 different players. Players received 5 points for a 1st place vote, 4 points for a 2nd place vote, 3 points for a 3rd place vote, 2 points for a 4th place vote and 1 point for a 5th place vote. Managers could not vote for players from their own team. In the event of a tie, the following tie-breakers were used: the player appearing on the most ballots breaks tie. If a tie remains, the player receiving the highest seed vote would break a tie. If a tie still remains, the vote is deemed a tie.

On August 9, 2021, Matt DiTullio of the Metrowest Orioles lost his battle with leukemia. In 2019, Matt won the MetroWest 'Most Valuable Player' Award and shortly thereafter was sadly diagnosed with leukemia, and faced a two-year battle fighting the horrible disease. In honor of Matt, we awarded him with the 2021 'Sportsman of the Year' award posthumously.
Beginning with the 2022 season, this award has been renamed the "Matt DiTullio Sportsman of the Year" Award. On behalf of MetroWest Commissioner Chris Currie and the MetroWest Managers, the BMBL is pleased to announce that Stephen Robb of the Metrowest Royals is the first player to be awarded with this honor.
Throughout the last decade with the Metrowest Royals, formerly the Sudbury Tigers, Stephen E. Robb's demeanor has certainly left a lasting impression on teams all around the MetroWest Division. He may be recognized throughout the league as the lead-off hitter who never sees a first pitch he doesn't like, but that's not what he's known for — it's his character. He puts the team needs above his personal goals, rises to every challenge, and always has an extra second to spare for anyone who needs it — friend, foe, or even someone he just met.
For these stand-up characteristics, Robb was unanimously selected for the 2022 "Matt DiTullio Sportsman of the Year" Award, which is handed out in DiTullio's honor to the athlete or team whose performance during the season most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement.
"When someone looks in the dictionary under 'really good guy, excellent teammate, and all-around great friend to everyone', there is a picture of Stephen E. Robb." - Christopher Currie, Commissioner of the Metrowest Division of the Boston Metro Baseball League (BMBL)
Off the diamond, he has proven to be one of the most thoughtful and selfless players, and never looks for acknowledgment. We'd like to bring attention to some of his most extraordinary acts.
When DiTullio was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019, Robb organized a t-shirt fundraiser. The "Bigger Than Baseball" t-shirts raised over $1,200. Robb has competed in the '100 Innings of Baseball' Charity Game every year since 2018, personally raising over $5,000 towards ALS research. He plans to lace up his cleats again this October for the 5th straight year. The self-employed real estate broker also helps underserved communities — veterans, homeless, and unemployed — finding them a safe place to live and/or work, while in the process of getting back on their feet.
This is the second such non-playing achievement on Robb's resume, as he was named the "Dan Tarpey Gentleman of the Year" by the Yawkey League in 2021.
Between the white lines, Robb has helped the Royals win five BMBL MetroWest Championships (2013, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2021) and aims for a three-peat with the franchise this season. Also, in 2022, he competed for the Somerville Alibrandis in the BMBL Masters Division, and was an invaluable veteran leader of the Braves in the Yawkey League, where he also serves on the Board of Directors. And most recently, he helped lead the Framingham Orioles to their sixth 28+ "Cape Cod Classic" Championship over Labor Day Weekend, a championship that was dedicated to the memory of Matt DiTullio.
