Spartans win 28+ title in inaugural season

2017 MSBL 28+ Champions - South Shore Spartans

In the franchise's inaugural season of the Boston Men's Baseball League, the South Shore Spartans are the champions of the MSBL 28+ Division.

It was a tough road for the Spartans on their path to the title, but thanks to a combined team effort, they managed to beat the Somerville Senators (16-7-1) in the quarterfinals, grind past the top-seeded Boston Bombers (23-1) in an action-packed semifinal series, and finally, sweep the Boston Cardinals (18-5-1) in the championship.

The Cardinals earned their way back to the Finals for the second straight year in similar fashion, sweeping both the Natick Knights (12-12-1) in the quarterfinals and the top-seeded Waltham Sox (21-4) in the semifinals.

The Cardinals finished the regular season with a record of 18-5-1, earning the No. 2 seed in the Blue Division. Their regular season success was due in large part to their pitching staff's league-leading 1.13 team ERA.

The Spartans also earned the No. 2 seed, but in the Red Division, finishing the regular-season with a record of 19-6. The offense batted .356 as a team with a league-leading five home runs, while tying the Bombers for the league lead in runs scored at 199.

The Spartans' regular-season success carried over into the postseason, where the offense, led by Chris Curran (15-30, .500 AVG), proved to be too much for the Cardinals' pitching staff.

As a team, the Spartans batted .316 with a .426 OBP, scoring 70 runs on 92 hits, with 21 of those hits going for extra bases, including a home run from John Jones in the quarterfinals. Defensively, Tim Troup and Mike Smith went a combined 7-0 on the hill with 35 Ks and a 0.42 ERA.

Congratulations to the South Shore Spartans on winning the 2017 MSBL 28+ Championship in their inaugural season, and hats off to the Boston Cardinals for a great season and their second straight Finals appearance.
