Ain't Life Grand

Mike Smith hits the first HR of his career in "grand" fashion

At the age of 16, Mike Smith, currently of the MSBL Natick Knights, formed his own rock band, "Libido". Mike would eventually attend the Berklee School of Music and later transfer to Plymouth State College where he earned a degree in classical guitar, with a minor in Spanish.

His musical credits include performances with, among others, the FBB, the Bay City Rollers, Bon Jovi, Boston, Skid Row, Neil Young, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Iron Butterfly, Aerosmith and Run DMC. He nearly won the job to play guitar for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and is currently a member of the Doug Flutie Brother's band.

Beyond his extensive musical career and love for Rock N' Roll, Mike always had a passion for the game of baseball. In 2013, at the young age of 43, he suited up in a baseball uniform as a Natick Knight for his first full season in 27 years. He batted a remarkable .320 with a .404 on base percentage.

And just yesterday, he achieved something grand. Mike hit the first home run of his MSBL career — a grand slam over the left field fence at Natick High School. Natick went on to win the game 14-5, bringing their record to 2-1 on the young season.

Mike was 3-for-5 on the day with 4 RBIs and is currently batting .333 for the Knights. He is living proof that we are never too old to play this beautiful game we all love.
