Somerville earns first Masters title in epic series

2016 MSBL Masters Champs - Somerville Alibrandis

In a heart-pounding postseason that included a walk-off home run, a historic 10-run comeback, and an extra-inning 2-night affair, the 2016 MSBL Masters playoffs did not disappoint — to the delight of the fans who watched from the stands and those who tuned in via Facebook Live.

Through all of the drama and exciting postseason action, the best-of-three Championship Series came down to the top two teams in the division — the Lawrence Pirates (16-2) and the Somerville Alibrandis (16-2).

The Pirates entered the series with momentum on their side, after punching their ticket to the Finals on an extra-innings walk-off home run from Darwin Hernandez in Game 3 of the Semifinals versus the defending champion Metro Red Sox.

They would carry that momentum into Game 1 of the Finals, where the Pirates' offense put up five runs in the first inning en route to an 8-4 Game 1 victory.

In Game 2, the momentum appeared to swing in Somerville's favor, as they took an early 11-1 lead through 3 ½ innings in the 'must-win' game.

Refusing to go down without a fight, the Pirates slowly chipped away at the deficit and eventually staged an epic comeback, scoring 3 runs in the 4th, 4 runs in the 5th, and 6 runs in the 6th, to take a 14-13 lead heading into the 7th and final inning.

Down to their last three outs, Somerville's Chris Deane began the inning with a lead-off double, followed by an RBI-single from Rich Iandoli that tied the game at 14-14 and forced extra innings, before the lights went out in Melrose due to the field curfew.

The game resumed two nights later, where in the top of the 9th, a lead-off error and a single by Ted Tracy gave Somerville two men on with no outs. Pirates' pitcher Carlos Mercedes was able to record two big outs before league-MVP Rich Iandoli delivered a clutch 2-out single that drove in two runs and helped lead Somerville to a 16-14 win in the historic Game 2.

With barely enough time to catch their breath, the two teams were back on the field for the start of Game 3. In the winner-take-all game, Somerville jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 1st, on a double from Chris Deane and sac fly off the bat of Marc Desroches. Two innings later, they made it 2-0 on a Desroches' RBI-single that scored David Mitrou.

Once again, the resilient Pirates' squad refused to surrender peacefully, staging yet another comeback in the 4th on a Toledano 2-RBI single that tied the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 6th, when Rich Winant led off the inning with an infield single, followed by a sac bunt from Stephenson that was mishandled and led to runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.

In what proved to be the game-winning hit, Franz Strassmann followed with an RBI-single that brought home Winant and started a 3-run 6th-inning rally. Somerville would go on to win Game 3 by a final score of 5-2, taking home the 2016 MSBL Masters Championship and the franchise's first Masters title.

Congratulations to the Somerville Alibrandis on winning the 2016 Masters Championship, and hats off to the runner-up Lawrence Pirates on a fantastic season and an entertaining Finals series!
