After 18 seasons as a Somerville Senator, including the last 15 as manager, Orazio "Raz" Azzarello has officially stepped away from the dugout, announcing his retirement as manager of the Senators, the BMBL's oldest franchise.

Raz closes his managerial career with an impressive 189-133-9 record, posting just two losing seasons over a decade and a half at the helm. Under his leadership, the Senators reached five semifinals, advanced to two championship series, and finally broke through last season — capturing his first championship title in unforgettable fashion.

The 2025 season proved to be a fitting final chapter, guiding the Senators to an undefeated 11-0 record on their home field at Trum, punctuated by three extra-inning, walk-off playoff victories and countless heart-stopping moments that defined his toughness, belief, and genuine love for the game.

While Raz may be hanging up the lineup card, he is not stepping away from the league. He will continue to serve as the 28+ Commissioner, where his leadership and experience will remain a vital part of the BMBL's future.

For nearly two decades, Raz gave everything he had to the Senators, first as a player, then as a manager, and always as a leader. He carried the responsibility of guiding the league's oldest franchise with pride, honoring its history while building something special for the next generation. Along the way, hundreds of players proudly wore a Senators uniform because of him.

As the torch is passed, the 2025 postseason MVP Mike "Smitty" Smith will assume the role of player/manager for the 2026 season. While it will be strange not seeing Raz leading from the dugout or hearing his familiar voice echo across the diamond, the Senators move forward in strong hands.

Reflecting on his journey, Raz shared, "This has been a fun 18 years. To every player who ever wore a Senators uniform, I hope you enjoyed your time and that it brought you back to childhood memories for a few hours. To have won the championship with this group will be something I will never forget."

On behalf of the BMBL, we thank Raz for the time, passion, and heart he poured into this game and this community. His impact on and off the field will continue to shape the league for years to come.
