BMBL Opening Day 2025

BMBL Opening Day 2025

After a long winter's wait, the 2025 Boston Metro Baseball League (BMBL) season is officially underway! Now entering its 38th year, the BMBL once again promises another thrilling summer across four competitive divisions: 18+, 28+ Boston, 28+ MetroWest, and 38+ Masters.

The long-anticipated start of the 2025 season came on Patriots' Day, Monday, April 21st, when the Masters 38+ Division kicked things off with a full slate of games. The rest of the league quickly followed, shaking off the early spring rainouts and diving headfirst into another exciting season.

18+ Division

Led by Commissioner Brett Rudy, the 18+ Division is set for a big year with 10 teams vying for supremacy across a 24-game regular season. Playoff structure will once again reward excellence, with six teams qualifying: seeds 1 through 3 earning a first-round bye, while seeds 4 through 6 battle it out in a wild card format.

A fresh face joins the fray in 2025 as the Malden Marlins, managed by Manny Powers, enter the division looking to make an immediate impact. The Middleboro Mocka Rays, winners of three of the last five championships, will look to defend their crown and add to their dynasty.

Mother Nature delayed the first pitch of the 18+ Division after a full washout this past Sunday, but the action finally began on Tuesday night, April 29, as the 2024 runner-up Merrimack Valley Marlins walked away with a 12-1 victory over the Boston Bandits.

28+ Boston Division

Commissioner Orazio Azzarello returns for his second season at the helm of the 28+ Boston Division, which features a stacked 10-team lineup and a 22-game regular season schedule. This year's playoff format expands to include nine teams, with the 8th and 9th seeds squaring off in a single-elimination play-in for the final postseason spot.

A new rule has been implemented in the division, which allows teams to roster one 27-year-old non-pitcher, giving them the option of adding an extra spark of youth to their roster.

The defending champion Lowell Angels, fresh off a perfect 7-0 postseason in 2024, came into 2025 with history on their minds — aiming to become the first 28+ squad since 2018 to repeat as champions. But the Cambridge Spinners had revenge on theirs.

In a season-opening championship rematch this past Thursday, the Spinners flipped the script on the reigning champs, erupting for 11 runs en route to a dominant 11-1 victory.

28+ MetroWest Division

In the MetroWest 28+ Division, Commissioner Chris Currie oversees a growing and increasingly competitive division. The 2025 season welcomes a new contender, the Worcester Nationals, managed by Carlos Mejia, swelling the division to 7 teams.

Teams will battle through an 18-game schedule, with the top four teams advancing to a best-of-three semifinal series. The winners of that series will face off in a best-of-three finals for the championship.

The MetroWest Division is also taking a major step this year, engaging in interleague play with the Central Mass Over 38+ League based in Leominster — a first for the BMBL. All games will count towards each team's record.

The reigning champion MetroWest Orioles aim for a historic fourth straight title, a feat only two franchises have accomplished in BMBL history. After two rainouts earlier this month, the MetroWest Division finally got underway this past Sunday.

Masters 38+ Division

Commissioner Scott Isaacs and the Masters Division wasted no time getting the season underway, celebrating Patriots' Day with a full slate of games.

The 10-team division will play a 17-game regular season, with eight teams moving onto a postseason that features a best-of-three series in the first two rounds and a best-of-five championship series.

The 2024 defending champion Boston Cardinals return with high hopes of repeating their impressive title run, but with a deep field of experienced squads, the road to another championship will be anything but easy.

With the chill of winter behind us and a full summer of baseball ahead, the Boston Metro Baseball League is ready to write another thrilling chapter in its rich 38-year history. New teams, new rivalries, and the same relentless pursuit of excellence — 2025 promises to be a season to remember.
