2021 BMBL season is officially underway

Opening Day has finally arrived and the 2021 BMBL season is officially underway, with the MSBL MetroWest 28+ Division kicking things off with a slate of four games yesterday.

The full 2021 schedule has been released in three of the four divisions, hoping to return to normalcy this season after the league was forced to play an abbreviated schedule in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Playing a full season is predicated on the COVID-19 virus staying under control, and although vaccinations continue to be administered around the world, the pandemic is not yet over and it's important that players continue to follow the 2021 COVID-19 Safety Plan and Guidelines.

BMBL President Jeff Coveney and each of the division commissioners provided an update on the 2021 season last week via Facebook Live. In case you missed it, be sure to check out the video below.

Below are some of the notable announcements that were made across each of the four BMBL divisions.

MABL 18+ Division

There will be a total of 12 teams representing the MABL 18+ Division in 2021, separated into 3 divisions (North, South, and Metro).

The BAMBUU (Boston Amateur Men's Baseball Union) League has joined the BMBL this season and will make up the 'Metro' Division within the MABL.

The three MABL divisions will compete against one another, although the BAMBUU League will continue to operate independently under the BMBL umbrella.

In other MABL news, the Boston Sox have changed their team name to the Boston Havoc, and the South Shore Grays return to the division after taking last year off.

Lastly, the 3-time MABL champion Cambridge Spinners have decided to move up to the MSBL 28+ Division and merge their team with the Cambridge Cantabs.

There are currently five MABL 18+ games posted on the schedule, with the full schedule set to come out later this week.

The first MABL game is scheduled for Sunday, May 2nd at 4:00 PM, as the defending champion Middleboro Mocka Rays host the Merrimack Valley Marlins.

MSBL 28+ Division

There are a total of 11 teams representing the MSBL 28+ Division in 2021. There is no longer a 'Blue' and 'Red' division, as all teams have been combined into one single division.

The Waltham Black Sox (formerly Waltham Minutemen) and the 3-time MSBL 28+ champion South Shore Spartans are returning for the 2021 season. The North Shore Havoc have changed their team name to the Boston Havoc, and finally, the Cambridge Spinners have joined the division after moving up from the MABL and merging with the Cambridge Cantabs.

The MSBL 28+ Division will consist of a 22-game regular-season schedule, with opening day scheduled for Sunday, April 25th with a slate of five games beginning at 9:00 AM.

MSBL MetroWest 28+ Division

There are a total of 8 teams representing the MSBL MetroWest Division in 2021. The Grafton Braves have changed their team name to the Milford Braves and the Northborough Cardinals have returned for the 2021 season after taking last year off.

The MetroWest Division will consist of a 21-game regular-season schedule, with the first slate of games kicking off yesterday.

MSBL Masters 38+ Division

There are a total of 10 teams representing the MSBL Masters Division in 2021. The North Shore Gators have changed their team name to the Swampscott Gators and the Saugus Sea Dogs are returning to the division after taking last year off.

The Masters Division will consist of a 17-game regular-season schedule, beginning on Monday night, April 26th with a slate of 5 games.

Best of luck to all teams in 2021 and be sure to stay safe!
