What is Ben's Dream?
Ben's Dream is a foundation set-up for Ben Siedman, a 10-year-old
diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare and fatal inherited
genetic disorder. Ben and thousands of children afflicted like
him have a life expectancy between 10 and 15 years.
What is Sanfilippo Syndrome?
Sanfilippo Syndrome is a rare and catastrophic genetic disorder.
Children afflicted with Sanfilippo Syndrome are missing an essential
enzyme that breaks down strings of a complex body sugar called
heparan sulfate. The partially broken-down sugar, or mucopolysaccharide,
accumulates in the brain and the body’s cells and tissue
causing progressive damage. The storage process affects children’s
appearances, bodily functions and development. Sanfilippo children
tend to look alike and have similar health problems.
How is the Boston Men's Baseball League involved?
The Boston White Sox from the MABL have officially changed their
name to the "Ben's Dream White Sox" to help raise
awareness of Sanfilippo Syndrome. White Sox players will also
wear Ben's Dream patches on their jersey in honor of Ben Siedman.
Additionally, the Cooperstown Classic Baseball Tournament held
June 9-10 at the Baseball Hall of Fame will be played with a
focus on raising additional awareness. Later in the 2007 season,
a local baseball tourney is being planned to raise awareness
and generate funds to help find a cure for Sanfilippo Syndrome.
